I Think So, but Maybe Not

I Think So, but Maybe Not is an installation that features a series of physically manipulated self-portrait photographs and a super 8 short film. The work is centered around the artist’s experience with childhood OCD and addresses former compulsions about religion. Although it is unclear as to where this obsession came from, she presumes that it is derived from her impending fear of death and of the unknown. Worries about tragic accidents and the repercussions of sin manifested in different ways and led to the development of a commanding and unpleasant relationship with God. Most obsessive behaviors were invisible to others with the exception of the phrase, “I think so, but maybe not.” When asked a question, Faulkner would answer with this expression in fear of accidentally lying.

In this installation, Faulkner applies materials such as yarn, cheesecloth, and metal wire to the photographs to create visual tension that speaks to the overwhelming sensation of feeling mentally and physically constrained by intrusive thoughts. Beneath the photographs, a short film is projected onto the same twin mattress that is featured in the film and is set on a continuous loop. The artist’s voiceover recites the prayer she used to whisper every night in order to fall asleep. Together, the video and audio allows viewers to experience the depths of her obsessive nature.
